Jeanette Aw and Dai Yangtian 'Together' again

SINGAPORE : It seems like every other drama that appears on Channel 8 these days is a ‘blockbuster’.
While it might be a tad difficult to pinpoint what exact quality is required to join the high and mighty drama club of ‘blockbusters’, one thing that does seem to help is a show’s star studded cast.
So, are good looking onscreen couple Jeanette Aw and Dai Yangtian, feeling the pressure of leading upcoming year end Channel 8 blockbuster drama, “Together”, which is touted to succeed last year’s runaway hit, “The Little Nyonya”?
“I would say that a blockbuster would be additional stress, because people will expect a lot more, but I’m all for it. I hope I’ll be able to meet expectations!” said Aw, who was also played the lead role in “The Little Nyonya”.
“I don’t feel stressed, I see it as an opportunity that I’ve been given by MediaCorp, and I hope to make the best of it. There’s no stress,” said Dai, who was dressed in a self-professed “head turning” bright green bell-bottom suit.
Channelnewsasia.com found out what’s so different about this blast to the past drama, which tells a story of six friends in Singapore’s post-independence era.
No, Jeanette Aw’s not Yueniang again
“Actually I would think she’s a very simple girl, she’s down to earth, subsequently because of her father’s gambling debts she has to be a bar girl, to pay off all his debts and actually help him get out of trouble,” said Aw, describing her latest character, Yao Jianhong.
Sounds an awful lot like Aw’s Star Award nominated character Yueniang in “The Little Nyonya”, you say? Well, you’re not the only one.
“A lot of people actually do think that [Yueniang and Yao Jianhong sound similar], because they’re both long suffering and well, they go through a lot of hardships, but essentially they’re still quite different,” said Aw, who also revealed she’ll be putting on her waltz and cha-cha dancing shoes for this drama.
“To me this is going to be another big challenge, as you said do you think it’s going to be very similar to Yueniang? I don’t want to deliver another performance where they all say, ‘Ah! She’s just Yueninang!’
“Like for Jianhong, who is able to sacrifice everything for her family, it’s more like women of that time thinking in such a way that they would just go with the decision made by their family, whereas Yueniang would defy and fight for what she wants… I would consider her fighting for women’s rights,” continued Aw.
The 30-year-old actress who also professes to believe in “women’s rights, equality and women having a say”, revealed that her modern mindset was initially a barrier in her portraying this meek and submissive character. In fact, Aw admitted that she “felt so sad” and cried while listening to the plight of older ladies who had lived through the 1960s to 1990s, while researching for the show.
With so much emotion and effort, will this finally be the role that gets Aw the elusive Best Actress Star Award that barely slipped through her fingers earlier this year? “I just do my best for all my dramas, of course as an actress for whatever drama that I do, I always do my best so that there’s a chance!” giggled Aw.
Dai Yangtian is Jeannette Aw’s “hubby”?
Now, playing lovers for a third time in two years - they also starred together in “The Peranakan Ball”, a stage musical spin-off from “The Little Nyonya” - Dai who admittedly said he and Aw were slightly awkward around each other initially, have obviously come a long way.
“Our chemistry is definitely a lot better,” said Dai who also added he has now no qualms about putting his arm around the petite Aw, “We’re entering a new phase, our communication is better.”
Aw, too, even wrote in her blog that she even calls Dai “hubby” after the production crew started referring to them as husband and wife after filming had begun.
But, Aw is not the only woman in Dai’s life, at least not in the show. Dai’s character Ling Xiaobei has two other “pretty” women, played by Eelyn Kok and newcomer Kola Zhou, falling for him.
Though Dai, 25, is quick to add that despite the “honour” of being surrounded by beautiful women, his character still only has eyes for Aw, a quality which he admires about the character, and which he adds, is similar to himself in real life. Might Dai be referring to a certain Miss Ann Kok whom he’s rumoured to be dating?
“I don’t know whether it’s from the Chinese traditions or other factors… but whether it’s having the concentration [to focus on just one thing] for work or relationships, I think I have that,” said Dai.
With major love triangles and crazy twists and turns, will this blockbuster be a hit (a la “The Little Nyonya”), or a miss (like the overly dramatic “The Ultimatum”)? Judge for yourself, when “Together” airs on Channel 8 this November.

He wants to raise family

AFTER spending just one year in Singapore, Shanghai-born Dai Yang Tian can already see himself raising a family here in future.
He had been shuttling between Shanghai and Singapore for a year before moving here permanently last July.
The MediaCorp hunk also recently applied for permanent residency but the application fell through because his documents were not in order. He intends to file one again.
Yang Tian said: 'Singapore's the best city I've ever experienced. Shanghai is very modern but it is still not as safe as Singapore.
'Living standards here aren't very high when compared to other cosmopolitan cities like Tokyo. Where else can you get a good meal for just $3?'
Yang Tian was recently seen in Channel 8 drama Table Of Glory and is currently filming for upcoming Channel 8 series Together which is scheduled for release on 30 Nov.
Although he confesses to not having heard the Pledge, Yang Tian says he likes our National Anthem, which he describes as 'melodious and sound(ing) very elegant'.
While he prefers hu cai or Shanghainese cuisine because he grew up on it, the lanky looker has taken a liking to local food like char kway teow, Hokkien mee and chwee kueh - though they remain an occasional treat because 'they're rather unhealthy'.
Yang Tian has also overcome his initial discomfort with Singlish. These days, he laces his sentences with Singlish terms like 'no lah', 'same pattern' and 'jialat'.
'Since I live in a foreign land, I believe I should adapt to its customs. It makes me more comfortable and gives me a more homely feeling,' he said.

Tinker, Tailor ... Together

Measure of a man: Mr. Dai sure is shy. Asked if he's excited about practising his newly-acquired measuring skills on chicks and the fella replied, "No! If I tried measuring a girl, my hands were keep on shaking!" We don't think anyone would mind. 
Sew much to learn: No, Yangtian's not falling asleep. The guy's just overloaded from the info. "I was talking to Wenhai (who plays his tailor father in the show), and the two of us couldn't catch everything."
Vital statistics: We know what you're thinking — which lady would kill to be in that position next to YangtianDai Yangtian has no affinity when it comes to needle and thread, but the leading man from this year-end’s Ch 8 blockbuster drama Together likes cutting up stuff anyway.
Together is this year’s The Little Nyonya. We’re not saying so simply because that’s what the industry spiel has been touting about the upcoming blockbuster drama, scheduled to hit TV screens in late November. ‘Cos like its ratings-powerhouse predecessor, Together is, one, a period piece — spanning nearly three decades starting after Singapore gained independence. And two, Dai Yangtian and Jeanette Aw are back at it again as lovers, after their lovey-dovey but short-lived pairing in Nyonya became a favourite with the fans.
But there’s at least one marked difference that Yangtian is gleefully relishing. “I live longer,” he says as his lips part into a toothy smile. “I’m still alive beyond the eighth episode, and that makes me very happy.” Of course, such a revelation is hardly breaking news, and the actor has already tackled his first lead role playing ping pong in Table of Glory. So what’s left to see is whether he as the primary protagonist and the megadrama itself will match the hype generated. Look no further than the less-than-favourable reactions to the heavily promoted Zoe vs. Fann vehicle The Ultimatum that ended its run recently.
Ask him about pressure and he replies how “it’s the pressure I give to myself that’s bigger than from the outside.” You almost expect this sort of response from a guy who’s been upfront about his showbiz career goal, not counting his thank-you speech after winning Best Newcomer at the Star Awards where he pledged to continuously improve his game with viewers as his witnesses. So even though he confesses to have “not much of an interest in needlework”, he’s already begun training to prepare for his role in Together as the son of a tailor.
And that’s where we met him, in a tiny tailor shop-within-a-shop in Hougang, for lesson number one — learning to take a person’s measurements and sketching. Yes, there’s more to tailoring than just stitching pieces of cloth together. “It’s not an easy profession. By the time [the teacher] was demonstrating how to sketch on the cloth, I was lost.”
While he hasn’t a knack for needle and thread, Yangtian apparently “likes to cut up clothes, I don’t know why! Like I’d cut off the extra length from clothes that are very long, then just use thread and fix them.” He points to the frayed collar of his round-neck tee, “I cut off the original collar because I don’t like tight, restrictive ones; makes you feels like it’s hard to breathe.” If he didn’t mention it so lackadaisically, we might have been alarmed by his scissors-happy pastime. “You could say it’s kinda my style,” he adds. “And no, I’m not bothered if people think I’m dressed inappropriately, even if my clothes happen to have some frays or rough stitching.”

昨天，该美容院特别砸重金，耗费近5位数为小戴（戴阳天昵称）准备了一趟别开生面的“流动记者会”。消息灵通的粉丝在美容院外等候偶像抵达，小戴贴心送上午餐点心，有女粉丝甚至还激动得落泪！

在铺上红地毯，装置得像机舱的巴士上，小戴侃侃而谈并分享了他的护肤经验。他透露，最近因为赶拍《我们》，每天工作到凌晨1、2点。但他还是坚持早上5点就起床跑步，每天只睡3小时！
我们化妆时间是早上7点，所以我一早5点就会起床跑步。我的水肿情况很严重，所以一定要运动排汗帮助脱水，这样才能以最好一面示人

小戴说，他原本也像很多男生一般，不理美容护肤的事，可是在日本当模特儿的时候，却被“逼”着上美容院正仪容。“我那时还没有什么护肤观念，但在日本附属一家模特儿公司，他们都强制要求模特儿上美容院护肤。其实也对啦，打理好自己的外貌，也算是对他人的一种尊重。”
第一次接下美容广告，戴阳天也很喜欢这种打破“女人才上美容院”的传统迷思。
美容院资深行销经历吴侒娜补充：“我们找戴阳天当代言，就是希望呼吁本地男生不要害羞，今时今日男生上美容院很平常，并非‘娘娘腔’行为。尤其现在男生在职场界打拼竞争激烈，更需要注意仪容，毕竟第一印象是非常重要的！”
