The "Together" Film Set visit in Malacca was indeed an emotional one for me. I was feeling both excited & down due to some recent happenings in my family. I was extremely troubled, thus I was uncertain whether I should go ahead with the trip . Finally, I decided to go. It was a memorable & happy trip. I'd like to thank my friends on the trip, namely, Anollec, Helen, Jac, Jane & Wenzii.
After watching "The Little Nyonya", Anollec & I wanted to visit Malacca. However, due to the H1N1 cases, this plan has been shelved. "Together" started its filming in Malacca on 20 Sept 09. All of us wanted to pay Dai Yang Tian (DYT) a visit & decided to set off on 3 Oct 09 (Mid-Autumn Festival). During our trip, we met many nice people who helped us in many ways. To these people, "Thank you very much!"
On 3 Oct morning, we found the filming location but DYT was no where to be seen. We continued to wait till noon & he still did not appear. We were very tempted to ask Eelyn Kok but we did not do so in the end. After our chicken rice (ball) lunch, we returned to the filming location, however, it started to rain. Our mood has changed for the worse due to the rain. We tried to look for shelter. Then, Jane entered a shop to buy socks for her son. May be that was fate! The shop owner, Uncle Lim knew we were there to visit one of the cast members, therefore, he shared filming schedule & 'stories' with us. He even mentioned the assistant director's name & told us he is an extremely nice person, & he would be able to help us.
It continued to pour & we remained in Uncle Lim's shop for shelter. Then, we saw Jeanette Aw arriving at the filming location & we were lucky to have the opportunity to take a picture, & to have a brief chat with her. We had wanted to ask her about DYT but eventually we did not do so. Camera started to roll, so we returned to Uncle Lim's shop. This aimless wait for DYT was not a good solution. Hence, Anollec & I decided to ask one of the crew members . Coincidentally, this crew member whom we approached was the same 'nice guy' that Uncle Lim mentioned & he is none other than Hu Wen Jue.
Hu told us DYT would not be filming that day. He was unsure if DYT had filming the next day. Anollec & I were a little troubled as to how we should give the mooncakes that we both bought, for DYT & the crew members. If we were to give them the following day, then the 'Mid-Autumn Festival' meaning would have been different, especially to the crew members. Helen & I met Hu the second time & he was really nice to check with his colleagues, & we finally knew that DYT would have filming the following day. Hu said he could pass the mooncakes to DYT for us. After discussing with Anollec, we decided to pass the mooncakes for the crew members to Hu whereas the Shanghai mooncakes for DYT, we would pass them to DYT personally. When Hu received the box of mooncakes, he thought they were for DYT, when Anollec told him they were for the crew, surprise was written all over his face. After that, Hu went round showing that box of mooncakes to many of his colleagues & told them they were from DYT's fans.
Since DYT would not have filming on that day, we left the filming location & adjourned to other places of interest in Malacca. Before we left, we made an appointment with Uncle Lim to have breakfast with him at 7am the following day & then to wait at the filming location for DYT.
The next morning, we woke up at 5am, after washing up, we checked out of our hotel. We arrived at Uncle Lim's shop before 7am. When we were there, crew members had started preparing for the day's filming. After our breakfast with Uncle Lim, he took us to the well-known Cheng Hoon Teng Temple which was given a UNESCO award in 2003. This temple was near the 'Together' filming location. We then took a slow walk back to Uncle Lim's shop. Little did we expect that the filming has started. We had to find a place to stand in order not to block the camera. One crew member asked us to go onto the 5-foot way in front of the staff resting room. Once everything was done, we could return to Uncle Lim's shop.
Ha ha! When we were on the 5-foot way, we saw DYT in the staff resting room. He was seated next to Elvin Ng. We waved at him, when he saw us, he immediately walked to the entrance. We told him we arrived the day before & had wanted to celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival with him but unfortunately he was not filming then. He told us he only arrived in Malacca the night before as he was filming in Singapore prior to that. Anollec & I then passed him the Shanghai mooncakes. DYT added that crew members told him about the mooncakes that we gave & he asked them in jest, why they did not leave any for him to eat.
I asked him if he knew the mooncakes were from Singapore Kangaroos (fans), he said he did not think of it & had thought they were from Malaysia Kangaroos (fans). That was how we chatted at the staff resting room entrance. DYT then suggested to look for a place to chat as there were many people entering & leaving the room. The Kangaroos were touched by his action. We suggested DYT to go to Uncle Lim's shop & it was there, his message to the Kangaroos (fans) was recorded. We would like to thank him for that.
We took a group picture with DYT & continued to chat with him. He shared many things with us & we chatted happily. He also recommended us to try the popiah at a stall located near the filming site. He told us he had to wait for an hour to buy the popiah. I then asked him, 'you waited for an hour?'. He replied with his waiting-pose, 'Yup! I just waited in this manner.' We all laughed at that action. You could watch this from Anollec's clip, DYT fans' Malacca Trip
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nezJLDtG7A .
Anollec was funny, she had originally wanted to quietly take a picture standing in between DYT & Uncle Lim, & requested me to take it for her. DYT was sharp & alert, noticed her action & said, 'Don't hide any more, come on, I'll take a picture with you. 'Haha, so that was how we all had a round of solo pictures with DYT. We were very happy!
The chat went on & on till a crew member looked for DYT. He had to prepare for his filming. Hence, the unforgettable 35-min mini-gathering with DYT has come to an end.
After DYT has finished his filming, we decided to leave. We told him that we would see him back in Singapore & he reminded us to take good care of ourselves on our return trip.
We adjourned to Palawan shopping centre & lunch after we left the filming location. After our Nyonya lunch, we wanted to bid a final farewell to DYT before we embarked on our journey back to Singapore. After arriving there, we waited for a while for DYT to appear. He saw us & raised 4 fingers in the air, then with his palm facing northwards, 'asking' us why we were back? We were touched by his action once again. The reason being that when we chatted in the morning, he asked us when we would return to Singapore, we said 4pm as all of us would need to go to work the following morning, so it would not be advisable for us to leave too late. And .... he remembered '4 pm ', he really cared for us.
We then watched DYT's, Jeanette Aw's, Eelyn Kok's & Zhou Ying's parts till it was time for us to make a move. We were reluctant to leave Malacca as the next time we see DYT would be at the promotional event of 'Together'.
This was indeed a very happy trip. We must thank DYT for the precious time he forked out to chat with us & to take pictures with us. For the Kangaroos (fans) who visited DYT at the 'Together' film set, this joyous moment will be an experience indelibly printed on our minds.
Thank you, DYT!
