Dai Yang Tian updated his blog!-17/01/2010

Film-site visit by the Kangaroos (Fans)
I couldn't wait to come 'here' once I reached home as I've not updated my blog for a long time due to my busy filming schedule. I'm really sorry about this. I was very happy to see all of you today. However, due to the strict control by the management, we were not supposed to take photos during our working hours, as they were afraid that once we get started, it'd be difficult to stop, hope all of you could understand. Hope all of you'd forgive me for not taking good care of you.
Recently, many friends told me about the top management's comments (on my acting skill), frankly, I've not read them then, so I made a special effort to look for them. Firstly, I wanna tell all of you that I'm an extremely strong person. Next, after reading the write-up, I felt it wasn't criticism but it was just his opinion/comments. There are fewer & fewer people giving me opinion/comments, thus I treasure each & every comment as this allows me to reflect (upon my own acting skill). This top management personnel has always been very good to me. Everyone just wants the drama to be good. Please do not worry, I'll watch the drama to see my own performance. I will use my improvement to show you the growth process (in my career). Tonight is the first part of the Carlsberg Telemovie series, hope all of you will like it. Still the same old sentence, 'I'd like more comments from all of you'.

Dai Yang Tian
It's hard not to be enamoured with this 25-year-old ex-model from Shanghai. Deep eyes, tall, lightly-tanned skin, eloquent - well never mind that he only speaks Mandarin and of course, that very appealing cupid's bow of a mouth. Dai Yang Tian shot to overnight fame playing the role of a Japanese photographer in 2008 Channel 8's blockbuster series, 'The Little Nyonya' and went on to win 'Best Newcomer Award 2009'. Currently seen on another one of Channel 8's blockbuster drama, 'Together' and playing one of the lead roles 'Lin Xiao Bei', he has women of all ages swooning over him like white on rice. Now you don't need to be a soothsayer to predict his future is one helluva shining star.

Translation of Lian He Wan Bao's article - "Laziness"
Original Text : Zhong Yan Ling
Translated : Anollec (to my best ability)
After sorting out FM 1003 listeners' votes on local artistes' popularity, the editor asked me if these artistes have good acting skills?
I replied, 'the survivorship in the entertainment industry is not dependent on acting skill but on popularity. As long as one has determination/perseverance, one is popular, one has market-value, one will be given opportunity. Only with this, one can then gradually improve on one's acting skill in future. '
An artiste's enemy is time.
Tony Leung (Chiu Wai), Andy Lau, Maggie Cheung are top stars who can now be completely indifferent to how the media write about them. They have succeeded in going through the waves of gossips and have arrived at the shores.
Thousands of artistes are given a decade or two to allow others to write about them. There are so many artistes, why would they choose you? Fans are greedy and fickle-minded, newspapers have limited space for publishing. New stars who are like protected flowers who cannot even weather a small storm or who cannot afford to tarnish their image will get eliminated unless they are well-liked or have people there to always protect them (in other words, have backing). However, I'm not that motherly, I can't tolerate having to take care of an immatured big child and having to guide him across the road.
But now, I want to help those who are willing to help themselves.
All the labelling such as ah ge, ah jie, princess, master are just fake names for media use. Artistes & media must not take all these too seriously. Dai Yang Tian (DYT) asked me about the relationship between media & artistes. I told him to take what the media writes lightly. Different media has different working procedures. What he can do is not to be affected by this external element/force. Allow the wind to pass without leaving a mark/scar. With his (DYT's) self-confidence and frankness, he should be able to handle it. I see there is a real ah ge in the making.
You only need to tell me what you can say, what I can conveniently write. I'll not include those points which you do not want them to be published. We (DYT & reporter) chatted for over an hour and there were only 15-min worth of the interview that can be published. With that, we have enough materials for 3-day news coverage. We play our roles well, thus enabling each other to complete our tasks well.
I asked if he (DYT) is afraid of reporters for asking tough questions. He laughed, 'Nothing to be afraid of, we just respect each other's work and that's all'. (Reporter continued to write...) If there is, there is . If there isn't , there isn't . Simple & straight-forward. There is no distortion of facts, no concealed plot, not related to moral, not related to capability, not related to talent. Anxiously trying to push all negative news to reporters, the more one wants to cover, the more will be revealed/disclosed. Or could this anxiety be due to one's guilt?
Why some artistes are popular, I'm lazy to reiterate.

Where art thou, S'pore hunks?
News from New Paper
Where art thou, S'pore hunks?
Are China-born hunks hotter than local heart-throbs? Viewers say what they think as the three male leads on Channel 8 drama Together battle it out

DAI Yangtian, Zhang Zhenhuan and Elvin Ng.
Proof? All three snagged the male lead roles in the current Channel 8 blockbuster drama series Together.
We may be a small nation, but really, just three to feed the appetite of more than a million female TV viewers in Singapore?
Among these slim pickings, two are foreign talents from China: Shanghai-born Yangtian, 25, and Sichuan-born Zhenhuan, 24 - the latter touted to be the next big thing by industry insiders.
Where are the Singaporean heart-throbs?
More importantly, what's so appealing about these China-born dudes?
Student Lena Goh, 17, said: 'Elvin is our only 'local hope' left in terms of young male celebrities.'
Fashion designer Low Ai Ling, 35, said the foreigners are better-looking. She told The New Paper: 'I think the China boys are more suave. Yangtian is the hottest as he just oozes sex appeal. Perhaps it's his low voice and good command of Mandarin as well. '
Accounts executive Jolene Soh, 32, thinks nationality doesn't matter, though she has a soft spot for Zhenhuan.
'Mandarin is their weakness'
She said: 'Zhenhuan stands out because he has a baby face. It's my bet that Zhenhuan may have started out the slowest but he will last the longest.'
But not all think the mainland Chinese actors are better.
While student Gwendolyn Tan, 21, thinks Yangtian is good-looking, it's 29-year-old Elvin that gets her weak in the knees.
'He's very personable, while Yangtian appears cool and aloof,' she explained.
Yesteryear homegrown idol Thomas Ong said: 'The China-born artistes are good-looking because the country has a big population and we can select the cream of the crop.'
Fellow man-hunk Tay Ping Hui said that he was impressed by Zhenhuan's work ethic.
'He's very hardworking and has the right attitude. He just needs the experience.'
We asked Elvin, Yangtian and Zhenhuan to compare who's the hottest among them.
The trio, however, diligently maintained good Sino-Singapore relations (that's PR-speak for politically-correct answers).
'The three of us appeal to different people so I can't say who is better,' Yangtian said.
'Elvin has the Pan-Asian look and I have the Taiwanese idol look. Zhenhuan has the Japanese idol look - he has extremely attractive eyes. If I were a girl I would be 'struck' by them.'
Competition
But Elvin said that although there's 'fair and healthy competition' among them, he feels that local artistes should get more support from Singaporeans.
He added: 'There seems to be this post-colonial complex where anything foreign is perceived as better.
'What we bring to the table that China-born artistes can't is that we are definitely closer to the local heart. For example, in Together, watching China-born artistes telling us about Singapore's history is a bit strange.'
Okay, but if Singaporeans are to support local artistes, there must first be talent for us to rave about.
Which brings us back to the first question - why is there such a dearth of young Singaporean heart-throbs?
To think that a generation ago, home-grown Mandarin-speaking hunks like Thomas Ong, Terence Cao, Edmund Chen and Tay Ping Hui were the talk of the town.
Their immediate successors included the likes of Vincent Ng, Ix Shen, Julian Hee and Adam Chen, who failed to hit the big time.
Which brings us to the tragic present, where Elvin appears to be, to put it bluntly, the best of what's left.
Perhaps he hit the nail on the head with a recent blog entry.
He wrote: 'Do you want to be a small fish in a big pond? Or a big fish in a small pond?
'So the next time you see me, don't ask me why Singaporean actors cannot compete with Hong Kong actors or cannot break into the Hong Kong market, and why Hong Kong actors cannot then easily break into Hollywood.'
But hold it before you begin to think our island is devoid of good-looking men.
Said Zhenhuan: 'When I modelled here, I saw some really good-looking Singaporean men but their biggest weakness is their limited spoken Mandarin.'
Local Mandarin dramas draw the biggest audiences on free-to-air channels here. Even non-Mandarin-speaking actor-hosts like Adrian Pang and Gurmit Singh - regular fixtures on Channel 5 - have crossed over to Channel 8.
Zhenhuan gave the example of a 26-year-old local banker and part-time actor who has a small role in the latest Channel 8 drama, New Beginnings.
'He's interested in acting but he said he can't join the industry because his Mandarin isn't good.'
Yangtian also agreed that China artistes have Mandarin as an advantage compared to Singaporean artistes. That could have been 25-year-old Nat Ho's Achilles' heel.
Once considered a prime candidate with lots of potential, his standing in popularity has wavered since he signed on with MediaCorp as a full-time artiste in 2006. But viewer Miss Tan feels language has nothing to do with it.
'Regardless, Singaporean actors are like limited-edition stars: they are popular only for a short period of time.'
